about

Many folks reading these words will be unfamiliar with the name A.S. - the force behind Dream Interpreter. They came into their own as a drummer in the early 2000's in Appleton, Wisconsin. Practically a child at the time, they were quite simply one of the great regional drummers of the Fox River Valley. Years later, they would go onto be in the great experimental rock group Catacombs Of Rome (aka Catacombz); who accompanied Tenement on their first national tour in 2007. Their power and finesse as a percussionist was unmatched and they demonstrate that quality still in this new extended play available through Crutch Of Memory Enterprises- in which they also supply much of their own melodic support and songwriting, along with our very own in-house session group.

Artists often grapple with the idea of death. When it isn't romanticized or mythicized, it becomes an object of reflection. Gospel musicians both glorify and lament it. Some metal bands completely embody it. In terms of Dream Interpreter's introductory EP, A.S. says, "My experience with death has been strange- and a huge inspiration in this recording." They come to this conclusion in part because their father - a revered Wisconsin blues guitarist - succumbed to a heart attack while on the phone with them in October 2014. In 2016, the only other original Dream Interpreter "member", Patrick Stanek, lost a lengthy battle with Leukemia.

From the onset of Dream Interpreter's existence, A.S. and Stanek relied exclusively on the G tuning which Ry Cooder taught The Rolling Stones in 1968. After Stanek's passing, A.S. began to work in new tunings they had used previously with their father- such as open E and open D. You'll hear them here.

You'll also hear Crutch Of Memory's studio talent. Namely, Amos Pitsch (Tenement, Dusk) on guitar, vocal, and Hammond organ; Matt Stranger (Technicolor Teeth) on bass guitar; Julia Blair (Dusk) on bowed strings and vocals; Colin Wilde (Black Thumb) on bass guitar; Jake Crowe on saxophone; Ridley Tankersley on piano; and rounding it out- A.S. on guitar, vocal, vibraphone, synthesizer, drums, and percussion.

On Dream Interpreter's debut EP, you'll hear A.S.'s affinity for big rock 'n' roll guitars; at times angular and challenging and at other times a solid and simple wash of explosive chords. One could find inklings of garage rock, Link Wray's school of blues rock fusion, and proto-psychedelia. But what is inarguable is that this music is blooming with life even in the face of its most prominent influence: human mortality.
